For over 25 years, the law firm of Growney, McKeown & Barber, P.A. has been representing the rights of individuals injured in premises liability situations such as slip and falls accidents, trip and fall accidents, and accidents resulting from a dangerous condition in a business or home. If you have been injured on the premises of another in St. Petersburg or the Tampa Bay area, we can help you understand your legal rights.

If you have been involved in a slip and fall or other premises liability accident, the following information may be helpful.

1. MAKE AN INCIDENT REPORT

If you are involved in an incident on a commercial property, have a manager or supervisor complete an incident report.

2. OBTAIN MEDICAL ATTENTION WHEN NECESSARY

Cooperate with emergency medical personnel and go to the hospital in an ambulance if you are injured. Injuries are not always felt immediately. You may experience pain or stiffness hours or days after an accident. When speaking with a doctor, be sure to discuss all of your injuries. Take photographs of any observable injuries.

3. OBTAIN INFORMATION

Obtain important information about the property and the accident. Information you should obtain about the accident may include:

  • Information about the accident including but not limited to the date, time and location
  • Name and contact information for the owner and property manager
  • Any statements made by the manager or any other employee about the accident or location
  • The names, addresses, and phone numbers of all witnesses to the accident
  • Whether there is any surveillance video of the area where the incident occurred

4. DOCUMENT THE SCENE

Take photographs using a cell phone or disposable camera of the accident scene. Find out if there is surveillance footage of location of the accident, and make sure any videos are preserved.

5. INSURANCE INFORMATION

Wait to make statements to the property owner’s insurance company until you have consulted with an attorney.

6. KNOW YOUR RIGHTS

Consult with an attorney regarding your rights and the steps you should take to protect those rights.

7. SOCIAL MEDIA

Consult with an attorney before posting about the incident on any social media platform.
